Over the last few months at wdl we have had the pleasure of working on a major refurbishment project for the world’s most famous toy shop.

We have been working on a £4m revamp of Hamleys’ flagship store, which is located on Regent Street in London.

The 2012 overhaul: the store’s first refurbishment for 12 years, had to be meticulously planned to allow the shop to stay open throughout the project and be finished in time for the arrival in London of an anticipated 5.5 million visitors each day during the Olympics.

Hamleys is all about fun and while we ensured that everything ran smoothly with the project, we too had a great time working on this job.  We are proud of our long standing relationship with Hamleys; wdl project designed and project managed the refurbishment of Hamleys head offices at Foubert’s Place, London in 1999 and then again in 2011 and were thrilled to be chosen for this project at the iconic london store.

The work involved the refurbishment of all five floors of the store and we are sure it will give years of pleasure to visitors: young and old.

We are once again partnered with Peels Design and Build on this project.  We have worked with Peels on a number of highly successful projects for students’ unions and  has helped us to give Manchester University a creative, practical and cost-effective solution in response to the complex brief.

Working alongside  Peels we have produced design solutions within fixed budgets and integrated environmental, disabled access facilities and customer service requirements  into our plans.

We have worked on interior design projects for a number of students’ unions.  These include Chelsea School of Art, which was a scheme to provide a new contemporary cafe bar for students and visitors.  Another was the University of Bath Student Union.  This was a scheme won in a competition in 2010 which was to fit out a new purpose-built student centre housing a reception, various social and meeting spaces with a cafe and large bar area.

We were also very proud to be involved with a project at the University of Leeds Students’ Union.  This was also a scheme won in a competition, which involved remodelling and refurbishing the main foyer and terrace bar areas of the union building.  Working to a fixed budget and timetable, this major project was completed in September 2010 as the first phase of a three-year master plan.  Alteration work to the first floor offices and meeting rooms has also been completed, with other projects now earmarked.

If you want to speak to us about  design, planning or interior ideas for your students’ union please get in touch.  We are more than happy to help and advise you about any aspect of your plans.  Contact us now.

We were pleased to hear about Virgin Active acquiring the Esporta Health Clubs.  This move will allow Virgin Active to develop its business and improve its UK health clubs offering still further.  It also gives us the opportunity to continue our long standing working relationship with Virgin.

We began working for the company back in 1998 when we were commissioned to design their first  health club concept for them.

We are now working with them on the Esporta Health Clubs and are thrilled to be involved in this stage of Virgin Active’s development.  There are 35 Esporta health and fitness clubs and 20 racquet clubs in the UK and they will add greatly to Virgin Active’s offering.

We will be working closely with Virgin Active on the Esporta Health Clubs and like to think that our longevity of relationship with the company is due to our first class design, professionalism and always delivering on time and to budget.

Other health club interior projects we have worked on include a groundbreaking health club at Twickenham Stadium, which is the home of British Rugby.  This five-star design and fit out of a three-storey venue included a 14m high indoor climbing wall, a 20m swimming pool, spa pool, sauna, cardio gym, spin studios, children’s area, treatment rooms, hand-finished hardwood locker rooms and a cafe.

The Virgin Active Classic Club set new standards for the industry.
